3. Peschiera del Garda — Your Home Base
Peschiera del Garda is one of the most convenient bases on the southern shore of Lake Garda. It combines a compact historic centre, canals and fortifications with a waterfront, ferry harbour, railway station, local buses and cycle routes. This balance makes it particularly useful for a family holiday: some days can be spent locally, while others can be used for Sirmione, Verona, Venice, Milan or the northern lake.

The historic centre is shaped by Venetian defensive works and waterways. Peschiera forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries”. Rather than being a single museum-like attraction, the fortress is built into the fabric of the town.

4. Lake Garda — How the Area Fits Together
The southern lake is comparatively open and gentle; the north becomes much more mountainous and dramatic. Sirmione, Lazise, Bardolino and Garda make easier days from Peschiera. Malcesine and Limone are more spectacular but require a longer travel commitment.
Swimming
Treat the lake as open water. Use suitable access points, follow local signs and supervise children closely around boat docks, traffic and changes in depth.
Cycling
Useful directions include Sirmione–Desenzano, the Mincio route towards Valeggio sul Mincio and Mantua, and the eastern-lakeside direction towards Lazise, Bardolino and Garda.
5. Peschiera del Garda Water Sports
Lake Garda is not just for ferry trips and swimming. Around Peschiera you can hire canoes and pedal boats, explore the fortified canals by SUP or canoe, have a paddleboard delivered to a local beach, or take out a small motorboat from the central harbour. Prices below are current planning figures checked in August 2026 and should be reconfirmed before booking.
Canoe Hire — San Benedetto
Single, double and tourist canoes are available from Camping Relais San Benedetto. Their own suggestion is to paddle towards Peschiera for views of the UNESCO fortifications and the canals leading towards the Mincio.
Also listed: fishing canoe €20 for 6 hours. Rentals are during the day rather than fixed hourly departure slots.
Pedal Boats — San Benedetto Beach
Simple pedal boats, canopy versions and boats with slides are available directly on the beach. The published September offer is especially useful for a quick family activity without needing a full-day booking.
Published September price: €10 for 30 minutes; €15 for the provider's listed 1–3 hour rental band. Maximum 4 people, or 2 adults plus up to 3 children under 10.
Guided SUP — Peschiera Canals
Xadventure offers a guided stand-up paddle experience around the canals of Peschiera del Garda. It is designed to let you see the fortified town from the water and is suitable for beginners who can swim.

SUP Rental Delivered to Peschiera
SUP Garda Lake offers paddleboard rental with delivery to beaches around Peschiera, Sirmione, Desenzano and nearby areas. Board, paddle, approved life jacket and leash are included.

Licence-Free Motorboat Hire
Peschiera Boat Rent operates from the central harbour beside the Navigazione Laghi ferry pier. Their 40 HP open boats do not require a boat licence and include insurance; fuel is charged separately based on use.

Before going on the water

Start at Piazza Bra and the Arena, continue to Piazza delle Erbe and wander the historic centre before returning to Peschiera for dinner.
